Andrew Field

Andrew Field is an award-winning artist who has painted all of his life. After graduating from Lancaster University in 2001 and receiving a scholarship for his contribution to the Arts faculty he decided to live for many years in the United Arab Emirates teaching and painting. In that time he had many solo and group exhibitions and over a period of ten years established himself as a recognised artist painting renditions of the landscape of Abu Dhabi, notably Saadiyat Island that is now home to The Louvre, Abu Dhabi. Andrew moved back to the UK in 2015 and has a studio in Stratford Upon Avon.

Andrew is a contemporary landscape painter, known predominantly for his landscapes. He takes great inspiration from the British landscape, travelling to remote parts of the country especially parts of Cornwall and Devon seeking out locations to paint. His paintings are emotive responses to experiences of being within the landscape, responding to the atmospheric qualities, colours, light and weather conditions from memory as well as source material such as photos and sketches made plein air. Andrew enjoys working with oil paints, building up layers to develop texture and re-working areas until the painting starts to achieve the energy, mood and tactile qualities to reflect the essence of the landscape. Influenced by English romantic landscape painters including JMW Turner and John Constable and artists associated with the St Ives Artist Colony, especially Patrick Heron and Peter Lanyon, his work is always developing as he responds to different subjects and experiments with new approaches, techniques and materials.

Andrew has undertaken many innovative and exciting commissions. Dubai Multi Commodities Centre commissioned Andrew to produce a painting using tea and Indian ink for the 5th Global Dubai Tea Forum at the newly opened Sofitel The Palm, Dubai in 2014. The completed painting measuring seven metres in length is hanging on permanent display in the companies headquarters. Andrew has been commissioned by many corporate and private clients in the Gulf and his work has been selected in recent years for Art Dubai. Andrew’s paintings can be found in many Dubai International Financial Centre offices including Goldman Sachs, Standard & Poor’s and Brunswick in Abu Dhabi. In 2019 Andrew was commissioned by SAGA cruises to create four large paintings for permanent display on board their latest cruise liner ‘The Spirit of Adventure.

Since returning to the UK in 2015 Andrew has exhibited in group exhibitions at The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) as well as at the Mall Galleries in London with The Royal Society of Marine Artists in 2019.

His work can be found in both private and corporate collections around the world.

Artist Statement

Specialising in landscape painting and based in Stratford Upon Avon, I produce original artwork, experimenting with a range of techniques and processes, working with colour, texture and mark making. Whilst reflecting on first hand experiences of the physical landscapes, I use my intuition to guide the development of my work. My paintings are personal responses to the outer world, inviting the viewer to travel and dream whilst exploring the physicality of the paint and surface.
